Sled Dog Sports
Sarah’s first experience of sled dog racing was in 1996 when a boisterous Siberian husky puppy Novac joined the family. He had endless energy and love of running, at our first training run both Novac and myself were hooked!
Jon’s first try of sled dog racing was in 2003 with Novac. It was pitch black dark & Sarah forgot to give him lights – her only instructions were it’s OK Novac knows where to go. Both Jon and Novac came back with smiles on their faces and eager to go again.
Since then we have competed in various classes over the years from single dog, single dog freight through to rig classes. The winter months we spend travelling around the country competing in races or just out having fun training our dogs.
In 2009 we ventured over to Australia where Jon competed in the Dinner Plain Sled Dog Challenge (snow race) and then was Race Marshal at the Canberra Sled Dog Classic which had over 100 entries.
We have been actively involved in our local sled dog club, Southern Regions, since 1996 and have held many positions from President, Secretary, Treasurer, Committee and Newsletter Editor. Sarah has also been the Secretary for the New Zealand Federation of Sled Dog Sports (NZFSS).
Sled Dog Racing is something that can be enjoyed be all breeds of dogs and is certainly not just for arctic dogs. There is also various aspects of the sport which include Canicross, Bikejor and also Weightpulling. You only need one dog to get started, contact us today for more information!
